Craft NI Gallery Blog

Welcome to the Craft NI Gallery blog – this is something we’ve been meaning to do for a while! We are delighted to have a space for a bit more conversation, where we can share images and information that we think you might like – whether it’s a maker focus, a curated selection, gift or styling ideas! We hope that you will find it engaging and inspiring!

With Easter break upon us, we feel it more than ever: start the day as you mean to go on! A sunny spell in the kitchen while sipping coffee from your favourite mug? Priceless. We can’t control the weather but we can definitely choose the little things that can bring us so much joy…the little things you reach for everyday without even thinking;  the ones that quietly become a staple of your space and day-to-day living: a favourite mug, a favourite dinner set when you gather around in the evening after a long day, a kettle for that special tea blend that mum got you perhaps?

Alison Hanvey is a well established ceramicist based in Newtownards. Many of you may have actually met at fairs and markets such as the ones in Hillsborough Castle or Castle Ward, as she loves taking part in these! Her work in the gallery here includes beautiful hand thrown mugs, jugs, milk creamers, bowls or egg cups, and, as of today (hurray!) a dinner set which is available to order. Her Strangford Lough range, with its soothing blues and greys, looks fantastic against farmhouse style wood tables, or in a more classical setting – they show up beautifully against grey linen table cloths or placemats. Add a bit of warmth with flowers or gold plated cutlery and your dining space will be instantly elevated.

Her fiery oranges and reds look great paired with brick partitions or with turquoise accents. They also make perfect Mother’s Day or birthday gifts – one never has enough mugs!

And speaking of gifts, how beautiful is this unique cake stand for a special occasion such as a wedding or engagement party? Other lovely items are sharing bowls, breakfast sets and small ‘cheer-me-up’ vases – we love the fact that her pieces are meant to be enjoyed and shared in company of good friends and family!
