Ceramic Fox, handmade by Carol Wiley in County Down.

Each whimsical animal figure is unique. Hand-made ceramics impressed with Irish lace. Oxides and glazes show the delicate lace and stitched patterns in the clay.

About the maker:

Carol graduated from University of Ulster, School of Art, Belfast in 2005. She has taught Art and Design since graduating and has exhibited her own work with the ‘Shore Collective’ throughout Ireland since 2010. Although her love of textiles flourished at university her inspiration came much earlier on at home. From a very young age she has memories of sitting next to her mother and grandmother whilst they worked sewing knitting and crocheting together.

As an Artist and Teacher with a Fine Art background sketching is always the starting point for a new idea or a piece of work. Her textile background and her fascination of old Irish linen and lace can be seen clearly in her recent body of work. Carols love of ceramics developed while teaching Art and design, she experimented with impressing texture onto the ceramic surface using her hand stitched and knitted fabrics and lace. She invites you to explore the surface texture with your eyes and to become curious about how it is created. Her fabrics will often be something hand-stitched or sourced from her grandmother’s treasured sample box.
