Space Ark by David Cousley. Handmade in Co. Monaghan, Ireland.
The spaceship is hand carved from solid pine and filled with forty individually hand carved and painted beech animals. All are presided over by the interstellar Mr and Mrs Noah.
Inspired by the beautiful German Folk Arks of the 19th century, full of brightly painted birds and animals. The Space Ark is an updated version for the 21st century, yet still very much a children’s toy in the folk-art tradition.
Approximate measurements: height 14cm, length 65cm, width of base 32cm.
About the Maker:
“I am interested in making sculptural work which explores a simplicity of line and form, while looking for symmetry and balance.
My working methods have an affinity to vernacular woodworking techniques. Folk carving and primitive sculpture are also an influence, with their directness of approach to both materials and method.”
